Peasemore Landscape Archaeology Project
This community landscape archaeology project is a multi-disciplinary investigation into the past of a parish nestled in the foothills of the Berkshire Downs. Peasemore is a small village located about 6 miles north of Newbury, with a fascinating history. The village is located around an 'enclosure' feature which the Group was initially invited to investigate in 2003.
Since then the project has grown into a large-scale investigation into the archaeology of the parish involving local people and run in partnership with the Parish Council and West Berkshire Heritage Service. The Project has recently been given a significant boost with the award of grant funding from the Local Heritage Initiative. Each of the sections below sets out progress to date in the main workstreams of the project.
| Project Aims & Research Questions Find out more about how the project is run and the research questions which we are trying to answer | |
| Fieldwalking BARG has conducted two major fieldwalking excercises to date, resulting in the collection of significant quantities of prehistoric worked flint. | |
| Hedgerows BARG has been conducting a survey of the tree/shrub species, height and structure, wood relic flora and earthworks associated with hedgerows in Peasemore. Read more about the survey here. | |
| Test Pits Details of the project to dig a series of 1m x 1m 'test pits' in gardens in the village, looking for evidence of the medieval origin and development of the village. | |
| Geophysics Find out about resistivity surveys carried out in the parish and plans for future work using the group's magnetometry equipment | |
| The 'enclosure' See the results of BARG's research so far into the function and origin of the 70 acre 'enclosure' feature, which is marked out by a circular pattern of lanes to the south of the village |
